STEAM WORKSHOPS

About This Program

Participants join STEAM professionals for hands-on workshops exploring the real science happening in America’s public lands. Using technology and scientific tools, participants investigate real-world environmental challenges and learn how scientists’ study and protect ecosystems. Each workshop highlights a different activity, from wildlife tracking and camera traps to 3D printing and biodiversity monitoring. These experiences spark curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving while showing how anyone can help protect nature. Workshops are free and take place at community spaces across the county.

WORKSHOP THEMES

Radio Telemetry | Learn how scientists track animals in the wild through radio signals, and what that data can tell us about an ecosystem by mapping your findings.

3D Printing | Ever wanted to learn how to 3D print? Discover how to create a model of some of the animals we find in the Cabrillo tidepools.

Biologgers | How can computer programming help with wildlife conservation? Conduct an experiment with technology that helps scientists understand how temperature changes can affect animal health.

Camera Traps | How do scientists monitor the park when they aren’t around? Explore technology that enables scientists to learn about the ecosystem and try your hand at using this tech yourself.

Biodiversity Snapshot | Scientists can’t be everywhere at once, so it’s important to crowdsource science! Learn how you can contribute to scientific discoveries using tools many of us have in the palm of our hands.

Ecological Time Traveling| Have you ever wondered how different kinds of scientists work together to discover the history of San Diego and protect the future of its plants, animals, and people? Come travel through time as you practice anthropology and ecology!

Science in Motion | Science can be communicated through mediums other than through just language and discussion. People learn in different ways, and many use dance and movement as a way to tell stories and attach a heightened sense of emotion to a particular topic.

Drastic Plastics |Plastic is everywhere, impacting our lives and the world around us. But what can we do to help solve this environmental problem? Come to our hands-on lesson and art activity where we’ll explore the effects of plastics on our environment and discuss what we can all do to help mitigate plastic pollution.

Want To Host a Workshop At Your Site?

Do you have a community venue or group that would be interested in hosting a workshop as an event?

We’d love to partner with you! Some groups we’ve worked with in the past include public workshops, scout troops, and school clubs.
